Ghana police seizes fake currency over $1m, officers reject bribe attempt
ASP Augustine Asante Kusi, the New Juaben South Municipal Crime Officer who led the Investigative Team.
Police in Odumase-Krobo have foiled an attempt by a counterfeit currency syndicate to bribe officers with GH¢200,000 following the arrest of three suspects found with more than one million US dollars.
According to the Eastern Regional Police command, the suspects were arrested on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, following intelligence-led operations by the Odumase-Krobo Police Command led by Detective Corporal Williams Asante and the Koforidua Municipal Investigative Team led by ASP Augustine Asante Kusi.
D/Copl. Williams Asante, who led the local team, said the group had been under surveillance for weeks over suspected counterfeit operations across the Greater Accra and Eastern Regions.
The police said the suspects — Ebenezer Natsu, 20; George Attor, 48 years, and Bishop Robert Olertey, 54 years were found with 105 bundles of counterfeit $100 notes, amounting to $1,050,000.
The fake currency was concealed in a black, red-spotted metal trunk at a hideout at Laasi and was allegedly intended for circulation at the Odumase-Krobo market in exchange for Ghana cedis.
The police said Olertey attempted to bribe officers with GH¢200,000 to avoid arrest, but the offer was rejected.
The suspects were first taken to the Odumase-Krobo District Police Command before being transferred to the Akosombo Police Division under Chief Superintendent Doris Grant for further investigations.
On March 13, 2026, the Odumase Circuit Court remanded Natsu to assist investigations, while Attor and Olertey were granted police enquiry bail.
The Police described the syndicate as highly organised, targeting busy markets to exchange counterfeit currency for local notes. Further arrests are expected as investigations continue.
Chief Superintendent Grant praised the officers and urged the public to report suspicious activities.
The Ghana Police Service reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on bribery, fraud, and economic crimes.
Investigations are ongoing.
